Hands on! – Acute Care

To start showing a bit of what we’re doing around Nepal, here it goes some pics from Rebecca Rai’s work at United Mission Hospital, Tansen (UMHT). Here is what she tells us about her work:

OT department in Tansen is providing services to diverse group of patients which began three years ago. As it is an acute general hospital we expect to see patients with various diagnosis of which the common ones are Stroke, SCI, Burns, Meningitis, Upper limb fractures, Hand Injuries, Developmental Delays, Arthritis and many others, sometimes with no specific diagnosis. Very rarely we get referral for psychiatric patients.

We see patients both in the wards and the outpatient department. Generally the patients are discharged earlier (as being an acute care set up), besides the patient come from very far off places so they cannot come for regular follow ups for therapy needed. Hence our focus is mostly on educating family members on required exercises, involving and teaching them while on therapy sessions, encouraging on engaging in daily activities of living etc.

Our work constitutes facilitating milestones in children with developmental delays, hand therapy and splinting, facilitating hand functions, enhancing sensorimotor functions, suggesting and providing simple assistive devices to improve functions etc. Occasional home visits and assessing the patients and their home environment is also organised mainly when there are visiting therapists in our department”.
